I liked the Oscars. I watched it live. I reckon Hugh Jackman did a great job. He's such a nice bloke. I first saw him in the stage production of 'Beauty and the Beast' playing Gaston, years ago. This was before he was famous. He was fantastic and I've liked him ever since. At Christmas we a huge Carols by Candlelight and he's been in that a couple of times. he really didn't get to really show off his stage talent though. I was wrapped when Heath Ledger won. I cried when his family spoke. I agree about the part where they show the stars etc that have passed. You couldn't see who half of them were. :-[I was upset by this and also that they didn't include Heath Ledger . I kept waiting for them to show his photo. I couldn't believe the songs for Best Songs. Where were the rest of them? Just 3? What about HSM3 they had great songs in it. If not HSM3 then surely there were other films that had songs. I didn't like any of the ones that were nominated.

Heath passed away in time for last year's Oscars and was added to that tribute. No reason to show him twice. Besides, they celebrated him by giving him an oscar (that I still am not convinced he deserved for THAT ROLE) And I just thank God HSM didn't get a nod past that really lame musicals tribute... all of the year's musicals were overrated, IMHO.... anywho, it's FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *bounces* And it's the first night of Fur Rondy! ( www.furrondy.net ) This weekend is gonna be packed with Alaskana for me!

Heath had a really interesting, compelling take on the Joker. I believe he did deserve an Oscar for his role, though honestly, I can't say. I don't think I saw any of the other movies for that category.
Actually, my favorite Joker will forever be the one voiced by Mark Hamill in Batman: The Animated Series. He sounded like he was delighted just being evil. Overall, that version of Batman is my favorite.

I don't find Ledger's Joker anymore out of the box than what Jack Nicholson did over 20 years ago. In fact Nicholson's portrayal shook me to my core... Heath didn't even give me a goosepimple... which is surprising because he's such a believeable actor... to me none of that film lived up to the hype... though what film can with the build up that stupid thing got.
I didn't like Batman begins either, though I did love the ending of TDK.
I still feel his death factored into his win... considering what he accomplished in his short time on earth I would not have had a problem with him being awards a lifetime achievement award, which is what I felt the award he did receive really was. He got passed over far too many times... had Brokeback and Milk been flipped I'd bet anything they wouldn't have batted an eye to give it to him...

I think you're being harsh on poor Heath. I think he did a fantastic job as the Joker. He really got into the character and I thought he was really creepy and insane. To me Jack Nicholson's Joker wasn't nearly as warped. I think Heath did a much better job. And just because he got the award didn't mean they couldn't have put him in with the others who had passed away. The award is not a tribute. It's an award. Big difference. They didn't show any of the other films he had been in etc. Like I said, I think he deserved it. He also won the Golden Globes and the BAFTA so I really believe he got the award for his acting.

But didn't he pass away last January? Wasn't he in the tribute from last year? If he wasn't, I could see how that would be tacky, but I understand why they didn't include him if he was already included in the tribute from last year.

Chris - Heath did not get shut out of the tribute because of any award. you misread - Heath was in LAST YEAR'S TRIBUTE to those who had passed on. he died January 22, 2008 (day after my birthday) and they decided to tribute him in THAT year's tribute... even though he did not pass away in 2007. The SAG awards, IIRC, were the first to do so ( think they were happening that same week IIRC )
and no, I am not being too harsh on Heath. I'm stating my opinion and I'm being harsh on the officials who judged the event. Heath was a fantastic actor. I loved him in many of his roles. I'm not saying his Joker is rubbish, I'm saying that it wasn't as fantastic as the media and some fans made it out to be. I found that to be true of the entire film, not just Heath. I honestly think Bale is the worst Batman after Clooney (who was just so pathetic I refuse to even consider that movie part of the Batman franchise) - and I LOVE Christian Bale. I can be a fan of someone/thing and still be critical. The only difference is that Heath is no longer with us. That is not my fault and it does not put him in an untouchable category. There are a lot of fantastic actors who are gone that aren't untouchable - Heath is no different.
I think you also misunderstood what I was getting at with the award and what it was... I get that it wasn't a real lifetime achievement award. That was my whole point. They could have still given him an award without the best supporting actor going to him. I just don't feel that had he been alive this year that he'd have won. He was in a freaking Batman movie for crying outloud. They tributed him as much as they honored him with that award.

Thanks Joplin4, I did have a great day. My youngest sister, brother-in-law and 2 year old nephew came over in the morning, followed by my eldest sister. My mum called me and I went out for lunch with my parents the day before my birthday. It was really nice. My sister-in-law called also. I went to my other sister's place for dinner with my brother-in-law and my niece and four nephews. They had a little cake for me. We've had heaps of birthdays lately so the family decided not to have a family party. It does get hard when you come from a large family. With three sisters, a brother, two brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law and two nieces and six nephews it gets a bit hectic. In just Jan and Feb we've had eight big birthday parties.

Hola, everyone! I hope you all are doing well. I haven't been around much lately, and I really miss being here. The boards doesn't seem to be quite active right now, though, does it? Anyways, I just thought I'd pop in and prove my existence. À bientôt, mes amis! ;D
