So much drama and talk had been floating around this project, what with the fact it was created in computer animation vs traditional, the multiple rewrites and scrappings of the storyline, the fact that Tink talks, the cast changes, the constant pushing back of the release date... pretty much everything you can think of had happened to this film. And people were very worried about it.
But I had the opportunity to see the movie before it was released on October 26th.
And despite all the stuff that had been going around for this film...I really enjoyed it. It was a very cute movie, great voice cast, good story. Enjoyable music. Darling characters that little girls everywhere are simply going to adore (I know I do.)
My only problem with the film? Tinkerbell herself.
While she was a DARLING character, you find yourself thinking of her as a seperate person TOTALLY from the Tink we know from Peter Pan. Just as she has been shown for generations, though, as for some reason, Disney has made Tink the 'cute, girly and sweet' emblem of the Disney universe. What happened to sassy brat Tink? She's not in this movie, even if this Tink sometimes CAN show her attitute, at least giving us SOMETHING to work with...but surely this can't be the same Tink that pulled on Wendy's hair and tried to kill her. Unless she's going to go through MAJOR changes within the next three films. (But I'll admit, she's totally grown on me since my first viewing.)
But that would be character development. And this is Disney. High hopes.
But that aside, it was an adorable film, good start for this new franchise, and the kids are going to love it. The fairies are very very popular at the park thanks to this (90 minute wait times!), and I'm sure Disney's going to make great sales on all the stuff stemming from this project. And now, I'll go into some character detail, which could contain minor spoilers if you've not seen the film, so just beware...
Tinkerbell -- I've pretty much given my opinion for her already. Not the same Tink from the original Pan films, but a cute heroine that little girls will look up to. Tink never gives up once her mind is set on something, no matter how bad she messes up trying. Again, she's grown on me since my first viewing...she's a cute little character, even if she's not the Tink we know from the original.
Rosetta -- As predicted. The prissy, but motherly leader of the four. Kristin Chenoweth does a great job with her, and she's my favorite character of the five. She's charming, but slightly sarcastic. She balances it all out well, her character is so sweet, and of course, Cheno's voice just makes ANY character seem cute! I'd liked to have seen more of her, however. Here's to hoping she plays a bigger role in the other films.
Silvermist -- We all assumed Sil was going to be cute and friendly, but I wasn't prepared for the blonde/bipolar route that they ended up taking with her. Dumb blonde syndrome...Silvermist isn't always quite there, but she means well and is definately the kindest of the five. She has a big heart...I guess it makes up for her brain size. She's my second favorite of the five!
Iridessa -- The stable one of the five, it seems. Iridessa is firm in her beliefs, not allowing Tink to sway her from her own opinions. She's the only one who really puts her foot down about Tinkerbell's crazy ideas in the film, but because she doesn't want to hurt her friend, she gives her a chance even though she knows it won't end well. Iridessa is the logical one of the group, very practical. Raven does a good job with her, as well. (Which surprised me, as I was VERY worried about that choice!)
Fawn -- As predicted. The tomboy of the group, Fawn is all about animals. She was very cute, but you didn't really get a lot from her, either, same as Rosetta. I think it might be because these two characters were as predicted, so we didn't learn much new about them, so it didn't feel like we got anything from them. Either way, she's a fun character, and America Ferrera did fantastic with her voice.
And there you have it...the five leading ladies of Pixie Hollow.
I'd recommend the film to any Disney fan, as its worth a watch. (Then again, I think I'd recommend ANY Disney film, with the exception of small few... ) I also recommend a visit to Pixie Hollow at the parks, if you're a fan of meeting characters. In my opinion, it was worth the 90 minute wait (BOTH times I've visited!)
So. What were YOUR thoughts on the film?
