"It was a romance from the start. The minute you know you can make a drawing move, the static drawing loses its appeal: movement is life. Animation represents the greatest breakthrough in 20th Century art."
Born: June 26, 1909 Hired: 1933
When he started at the Walt Disney Studios, Reitherman worked on the Silly Symphonies, Mickey Mouse films, and Donald Duck shorts. He helped usher in the full-length animated feature, and worked on many films under Walt. In World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After returning to the studios after the war, he made several more films until Walt asked him to take the reigns of the full-length animated features as director in the 1963 film "The Sword in the Stone". When Walt passed away, Reitherman helped provide leadership for the studio. Here are a few of our favorite characters he has brought to life:
Monstro the whale "Rite of Spring" Headless Horseman chasing Ichabod Crocodile in "Peter Pan" Maleficent (dragon)
