Walt Disney's choice to follow "The Story of Robin Hood" was James M. Barrie's "Peter Pan", about the boy that wouldn't grow up. When Wendy's father tells her that it's time for her to grow up, Peter Pan takes her and her brothers to Neverland, where she'll never grow up. But the menacing Captain Hook uses the visitors' entrance in Neverland to lead him to Peter Pan's hiding place, where he can repay the boy for cutting off his hand and feeding it to the crocodile. The end result is a fight for life and all of Neverland as Pan and Hook clash swords. The film ends as Peter Pan flies the pirate ship back to London, delivering Wendy, John, and Michael Darling home once again.
Cast: Peter Pan: Bobby Driscoll
Wendy Darling: Kathryn Beaumont
Captain Hook: Hans Conried
George Darling: Hans Conried
Mr. Smee: Bill Thompson
Mary Darling: Heather Angel
Michael Darling: Paul Collins
John Darling: Tommy Luske
Indian Chief: Candy Candido
Narrator: Tom Conway
Songs: "The Elegant Captain Hook", "The Second Star to the Right", "What Makes the Red Man Red?", "You Can Fly, You Can Fly, You Can Fly", "Your Mother and Mine"--Sammy Cahn and Sammy Fain
"A Pirate's Life"--Oliver Wallace and Erdman Penner
"Following the Leader"--Oliver Wallace, Ted Sears, and Winston Hibler
"Never Smile at a Crocodile"--Frank Churchill and Jack Lawrence
This film reunited Kathryn Beaumont (Alice) and Bill Thompson (White Rabbit) from "Alice in Wonderland", which was released two years earlier. For the part of Peter Pan, Disney chose Bobby Driscoll, who made his debut with Luanna Patten in "Song of the South". The film also stuck to the original ideas of the play by Barrie, in which George Darling and Captain Hook are portrayed by the same actor and Tinker Bell speaks by the sound of a bell or chimes.
Tinker Bell continues to be the main legacy of this film. She has become a Disney symbol. For years, she opened Walt Disney's television shows. In 2009, she starred in her own movie.
So, what are your thoughts on this classic Disney film?
