About 20 years before the foxes and lions of the animal kingdom told this story, Walt Disney produced this live action film based on Henry Gilbert's story of Robin Hood. The story follows the historic events as King Richard leaves England to participate in the crusades. He leaves his brother, John, to the throne. John turns out to be a wicked king who oppresses the people with outrageous taxes and unjust laws. In response, Robin Hood assembles a gang, which he calls his Merrie Men. The group, consisting of Little John, Will Scarlet, and Friar Tuck, "robs from the rich to feed the poor". The Sheriff of Nottingham attempts to stop Robin Hood. By the end of the film, King Richard returns and names Robin the Earl of Locksley. He then orders Maid Marian, Robin's childhood sweetheart, to marry him.
Cast: Robin Hood: Richard Todd Maid Marian: Joan Rice Sheriff of Nottingham: Peter Finch Friar Tuck: James Hayter Little John: James Robertson Justice Queen Eleanor: Martita Hunt Prince John: Hubert Gregg Allan-a-Dale: Elton Haytes King Richard: Patrick Barr Will Scarlet: Anthony Forwood
The film features several scenes omitted in the animated film 20 years later. One scene omitted was the meeting between Robin Hood and Little John. Another scene missing in the animated feature, understandably, is where the Sheriff of Nottingham kills Robin's father.
I have actually never seen this film. Has anyone seen this? If you have, what did you think of it? If you haven't, would you like to see this?

I saw the advertisement for that film when we went to see "Percy Jackson". It looks interesting. I didn't even think about it, but you're right. The story of Robin Hood is about to get pretty popular. I wouldn't be surprised to see this film on DVD soon.
A tad bit off topic, but I saw a series of fantasy books called "Hood", "Tuck", and "Scarlet" in Barnes and Noble the other day based on the Robin Hood characters. Sounds interesting.
