Disney's first live action film looked to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. The film tells a story of Jim Hawkins, who finds a treasure map in his possession after its owner, Billy Bones, dies in the inn where Jim works. Jim asks Squire Trelawney to finance a voyage to find this treasure, which once belonged to the wicked Captain Flint. One of Flint's shipmates, Long John Silver, befriends Jim and assists with the selection of the crew for this voyage. Later, we learn that Silver is really a pirate, and he plans to mutiny and take the treasure for himself and the other pirates. His crew of pirates turns against him when they discover that someone has already stolen the treasure, and they give Silver the Black Spot, a pirate's death sentence. Hawkins and Silver must fight to survive on Treasure Island.
Cast: Jim Hawkins: Bobby Driscoll Long John Silver: Robert Newton Captain Smollett: Basil Sydney Squire Trelawney: Walter Fitzgerald Doctor Livesey: Denis O' Dea George Merry: Ralph Truman Billy Bones: Finlay Currie Pew: John Laurie Black Dog: Francis de Wolff Ben Gunn: Geoffrey Wilkinson Mr. Arrow: David Davies
This was Walt Disney's first attempt at a complete live-action film. While "Song of the South" and "So Dear to My Heart" had been mostly live action, both films had animated scenes and characters. "Treasure Island" features no animation.
So, has anyone seen this film? What are your thoughts?

I got this on DVD around the time Treasure Planet came out. It's a great film and great story, and one that I don't think will ever get old. (I mean, come on. Pirates and adventure on the high seas? What more could one ask for?)

I remember when I read the book. Most books have a point in which I pause for a while where the action gets dull. Not this story. I really had difficulty putting this one down. I suppose that's what makes this a great idea for a film.

Good luck it sounds like a neat place for job training.
