Background: The film itself is a Cinderella story. After the war, the Disney Studios couldn't afford to make the quality films like those of "Bambi" and "Fantasia". So, Walt decided to release package features such as "Make Mine Music", "The Three Caballeros", and "Fun and Fancy Free" in order to revive their bankbook. In 1950, Walt Disney was ready to once again attempt a feature length story. He chose the Charles Perrault story of Cinderella.
Plot: Cinderella's father remarries after the passing of his wife. The woman he marries is extremely jealous of his daughter's beauty, and desires to advance the status of her own daughters, Anastasia and Drizella. When Cinderella's father passes away, Cinderella's stepmother reveals her true colors. She puts Cinderella to work keeping the house, while her own daughters live a life of liesure. When the king announces a royal ball to marry off his son, Cinderella's "family" makes sure she is unable to attend. With the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella goes to the ball and falls in love with the prince. Since the spell ends at midnight, Cinderella flees the ball as the clock strikes twelve, leaving behind one glass slipper. The prince vows that he'll only marry the girl whose foot fits the slipper. As the Grand Duke arrives to try the slipper on the feet of Cinderella's stepsisters, her stepmother locks her in her room to keep her from having a chance. With the help of her animal friends, Cinderella proves that she was the mystery maiden at the ball, and marries her prince. "And they lived happily ever after."
Songs: "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo", "So This is Love", "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes", "Cinderella", "The Work Song", "Oh, Sing Sweet Nightingale" by Mack David, Jerry Livingston, and Al Hoffman
Cast: Ilene Woods: Cinderella
William Phipps: Prince Charming
Eleanor Audley: Lady Tremaine (Stepmother)
Rhoda Williams: Drizella
Lucille Bliss: Anastasia
Verna Felton: Fairy Godmother
Luis Van Rooten: King/Grand Duke
James Macdonald: Gus/Jaq
Released on February 15, 1950
This was a gamble for Disney. If the film failed, the studio failed. If it was successful, the studio would be back in business. Fortunately, the film was a big success. Disney was back on top.
