I was really glad I made it, as I didn't even find out they were coming until yesterday. When the Dear Friends tour was scheduled to come here, it was canceled for some reason, which was extremely disappointing. Nobuo Uematsu was also in attendance for the show, which was really awesome. He got up on stage a few times and joked around a bit, pretending to sing the opera part after they performed Maria and Draco, and also again at the end after they performed One Winged Angel. He was pretty adorable. They also had a meet and greet for people that paid a lot of money, which would have been really neat, but all I would've wanted to say would be thank you to him.
They played most of the songs you would expect, if you go to the products link on their website and go to the amazon page for the CD, that was essentially the program for the night, with the order differing slightly. They had the video screen showing scenes from the games up, which I thought would be kind of neat, but I ultimately ended up disliking it. I would have been fine just watching the orchestra and the choir do their thing rather than be distracted by scenes from the game. It just ended up taking away from the music at times and also seemed out of place. Final Fantasy games are not always the most pleasing things to watch, and that was underscored a few times during the show. I know they put it in there to be entertaining, but it almost seems patronizing in a way, like video game fans couldn't be bothered to sit still without something shiny to look at. If they toned it down a bit, I think it would be fine (During Maria and Draco the video was off for most of it, which was nice).
The venue I was in had the orchestra microphoned and amplified. I don't know if that will be the case for everywhere, but the balance between the orchestra and choir I thought was a bit off at first (they opened with Liberi Fatali). It also made it seem less cool at first, as the whole point of going to see an orchestra is to hear all the instruments live and not through a soundboard. After that, the sound was fine, though, and the balance seemed to be better.
As for the music, I'm not sure what needs be said. I'm guessing most of you already know the music pretty well. It was as good as always, electrifying to hear live and played by an orchestra, among so many others that share a connection to the songs. Highlights include Aeris's Theme, Medley from Final Fantasies I-III, Don't Be Afraid, Vamo Alla Flamenco, Terra's Theme, and Maria and Draco. I was really surprised they played that, and the opera singers got into the song and acted it out while they sang, which was entertaining. The songs I didn't know very well from FFXI made me want to hear more from that soundtrack, as well. Overall, a very good show, highly recommended. Go if you can!
