Walt Disney's next feature film started out as two films, both developed before the war. Finding that neither story could be developed into its own film and discovering that it would be more economical to package the films together, Walt decided to combine both ideas into a package feature.
Plot: Jiminy Cricket takes us on a fun musical adventure. First, he puts on a record of Dinah Shore telling the story of a bear named Bongo to cheer up the gloomy doll and grim teddy bear. Bongo, the bear from the circus, dreams of his freedom. One day, he escapes, but finds that life outside his "gilded cage" isn't as grand as he thought. Things change when he falls in love with Lulu Belle. But, he must first face the jealous Lumpjaw. The story ends happily as Bongo and Lulu express their love to each other by slapping the other silly. Once the record is over, Jiminy finds an invitation to a party hosted by Edgar Bergen at the house across the way. At the party, Bergen tells the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. For this version, Walt Disney chose to use Mickey Mouse, his famous giant killer, along with his pals, Donald Duck and Goofy. The trio rescues the magic harp from the giant and restores peace to Happy Valley.
Music: "Fun and Fancy Free" by Bennie Benjamin and George Weiss
"Lazy Countryside" by Bobby Worth
"Too Good to be True" and "Say it With a Slap" by Eliot Daniel and Buddy Kaye
"Fee Fi Fo Fum" by Paul J. Smith and Arthur Quenzer
"My Favorite Dream" by William Walsh and Ray Noble
"I'm a Happy-Go-Lucky Fellow" by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington
"Beanero" by Oliver Wallace
"My, What a Happy Day" by Bill Walsh and Ray Noble
Cast: Edgar Bergen: Himself
Charlie McCarthy: Himself
Mortimer Snerd: Himself
Luana Patten: Herself
Dinah Shore: Narrator (Bongo)
Walt Disney: Mickey Mouse
Clarence Nash: Donald Duck
Pinto Colvig: Goofy
Billy Gilbert: Willie the Giant
Anita Gordon: Singing Harp
Cliff Edwards: Jiminy Cricket
This was Walt Disney's last film as the official voice of Mickey Mouse. This film also gave Cliff Edwards the chance to reprise his performance of Jiminy Cricket from "Pinocchio". It also allowed some of the voice cast from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" to work together again. Billy Gilbert, who played Willie the Giant, also voiced the dwarf Sneezy. Pinto Colvig, the voice of Goofy, worked on "Snow White" as the voices of Grumpy and Sleepy.
