"And while somebody else might be more interested in the drawing of the character in that situation, I was particularly interested in how that character actually felt."
On October 31, 1912, Oliver Martin Johnston, Jr. was born. He went to Stanford University where friend and fellow animator Frank Thomas also studied. In 1935, he joined the Walt Disney Company, which was set to produce the first full-length animated feature. He became a directing animator, author, and Disney Legend. In addition to receiving the Disney Legends Award, President George W. Bush presented him with the National Medal of Arts on November 9, 2005. Ollie Johnston was the last of Walt Disney's "9 Old Men" to pass away on April 14, 2008. His lengthy career left us many of our favorite characters. Here are a few of his most memorable characters:
Thumper Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine Alice Mr. Smee Lady, Jock, and Trusty Flora, Fauna, Merryweather (with Frank Thomas) Dalmatians and Nanny Merlin and Wart Baloo and Bagheera The Gabble Sisters and Uncle Waldo Robin Hood and Prince John Bernard, Bianca, and Rufus (he served as the model for Rufus, too) Winnie the Pooh Tod and Vixey
These are just a few. In addition, he cowrote "The Disney Villain" with Frank Thomas.
I could say a lot more about him, but I'll open the discussion up to y'all. What are your favorite works of Ollie Johnston?
