As World War II raged, Disney decided to go on a goodwill tour to Latin America to help with the war effort. While traveling, Disney and his animators drew sketches for story ideas and to capture the beauty and culture of the land. They returned to the States and stitched together a combination of stories and documentary sequences in the first of what would become the "wartime package features". The film premiered in Rio de Janeiro on August 24, 1942.
