Disney and Pixar's latest film Up finally flies into theaters today. So far the reviews have been good for the film. What do you think of it? I'll make a poll later tonight.

I just got back from seeing it and I really enjoyed it. It was sweet, heartwarming, funny, and a tearjerker. I don't think I've ever cried so much during the first five minutes of any movie before. But it was also a really funny movie.
Partly Cloudy was a really cute and fun short as well. Baby animals are always adorable.

Very good movie. Sweet and sad, but still had some laughs. Quite enjoyable.

where would you rank it in the Pixar family?

It's difficult to rank Pixar films. They're all quite different. There are some films that are perhaps weaker than others, but even the weakest Pixar film is better than 90% of the animated features (heck, even most live action films) of today. That is thanks to the story, characters, and rich animation... And perhaps something extra that just seems to be lost in movies and entertainment of today.
It's funny. I've been thinking about Up all day, and I realized I tend to do this with most Pixar movies I watch. With many movies the process is the same; I watch, I like, and I go home. I may enjoy the film, but after it's over, it's over. But Pixar films tend to be thought provoking and just merit deep appreciation. There's always something that strikes a nerve with me.
As for Up, I don't know quite where to place it. After I got Wall-E on DVD, think I must have watched it ten times in the first week. I'm not really exaggerating. I just kept watching it. I don't know if I'll do the same with Up. Not because it isn't as good as Wall-E, but because it was such a roller coaster of emotions. It's a very personal thing, I guess. Up is a terrific movie and I will get it on DVD/Blu-Ray and I will watch it often. But the emotion may sting a little.

I agree that the 'worst' Pixar film is better than most anything else we get these days in its genre or against really any film...

I think part of the appeal of any given Pixar movie is that they aren't afraid to cater to an older audience. It's something that is seamlessly incorporated. Where most movies aimed at kids may toss in a few jokes that goes over their heads or a perhaps a old song to at least try to make the movie going experience tolerable for the parents. But Pixar films are different. They don't rely so much on the cheap pop culture jokes or flavor of the month tidbits. They feature a good, honest story that provides good, honest entertainment.
It reminds me of story Walt Disney once told. The story of the time he took his kids to the park, and watched them play. While he was glad they were having fun, there was nothing in it for him. Nothing he could enjoy with them. I think it has become the same way with animation and other kiddy flicks. But Pixar has created film after film that almost seem like they are meant for adults even more so than for children.
I for one, applaud them for that.

I think that's what set Walt's films above the rest way back when. As far as I'm concerned Pixar has the same magic as old Walt himself... those at the Walt Disney company, not so much... there's a lot that's been missing in their animation films... live action and pixar have saved their marketability, at least for me.

Yeah, it's hard for me to rate the pixar movies as well. They all really focus on something different. It's not my favorite of course (as if anyone dosen't know my A Bug's Life obsession) but I still thought it was wonderful, especially the beginning. It was sad but beautiful. Being a major fan of Uncle Walt, I have to agree with you two, it's wonderful that the films are created in a way to cater to everyone's enjoyment.

Did any of you catch the reference with the dogs playing poker? I doubt many of the kids would have caught that, but James and I did. I was just curious if anyone else noticed it.

I caught the dogs playing poker, but I knew in advance to look for that scene. So, no cookies for me.

Fantastically emotional film. Not one I plan to watch over and over and over and over, and it wasn't *perfect* but definitely another GREAT one done by Pixar. Loved it, cried twice!
