I know this is a Disney forum, so it is more than likely that the results of this poll will be one-sided, but it seems that anyone who likes Disney seems to like Prince of Egypt, as well. I have come to the conclusion that these two films are very similar.
Think about it...
- Both focus on religion (Prince - Judaism, Hunchback - Christianity)
- Both have songs sporting foreign languages for lyrics (Prince - Hebrew, Hunchback - Latin)
- Both begin in the sky panning down onto a famous world structure.
- Both begin documenting the persecution of a racial group (enslavement of Jews, arresting of Gypsies)
- Both involve mothers fleeing the villains secretly with her infant child (although Jochebed actually survives).
- Both involve attempted infantcides (Frollo attempts to drown Quasi, guards perform massacres of Jewish children)
- Both start off with the hero being taken in by the oppressor of his people, being named in a foreign language (Moses - "out of the water" in Hebrew, Quasimodo - "half formed" in Latin)
- Both have fiery heroines, with dark skin and black hair, good at dancing, who cuss out authority figures in front of a large crowd and are given a break by the man whom they will eventually marry (Tzipporah has always reminded me of Esmeralda).
- Both villains are in positions of power, sporting conspicuous head-dresses and abusing their power.
- Frollo burns the city of Paris, Ramses allows Egypt to burn, both for their own stubborn purposes.
- Ramses doubles the slaves' work load after his confrontation with Moses, Frollo arrests hordes of Gypsies after his confrontation with Esmeralda.
- Both films place emphasis on little children to accentuate the theme (Hunchback's little girl at the end of the film, the Jewish girl in "When You Believe")
- Both sport climaxes with technologically advanced computer imagery (The Sanctuary Scene, The Parting of the Red Sea).
- Both films end panning over a large crowd, with a reprise of the song that was sung in the beginning of the film.
So, which do you prefer?
